Students participate in intensive advanced and high-level courses in the different fields of biology, which are the most relevant for their specialization, to make them informed about the recent developments and frontline problems. Some 60 % of the time is practical hours (spent on laboratory/field practice and on research) ensuring knowledge of state-of-the-art methods. The curriculum is assembled from intensive advanced level courses on the theoretical aspects of selected disciplines and special seminar series on problems in a narrower field of science. -

Thanks to Darwin, we know the process of evolution has shaped the bewildering variation we see around us. Through this Master's Degree programme students will acquire an explicit evolutionary biological perspective in the study of nature, thereby increasing capacity for understanding patterns and processes, on scales varying from the cellular to the ecosystem level. -

This MSc is aimed at professionals already working in Biomedical Science or a related healthcare discipline. The two-year online course is led by a research-active team with years of hands-on experience and is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), the leading body for those working in the field. Students will acquire practical skills and advanced subject knowledge. They will learn to reflect critically on current practice and the latest developments in their chosen specialism. They will explore ethical issues and policy frameworks as they develop a flexible approach to problem-solving in their chosen specialism. Ranked in the Top Five UK universities for Biomedical Science Research Power, the faculty recorded an unprecedented 100% 4* (world-leading) score for its Research Environment (REF 2014). Ulster’s Biomedical Science MSc was the first online distance learning course of its kind and continues to offer a programme that is globally relevant. The School has over 20 years of experience delivering a range of postgraduate online courses, with links to a number of international universities and industrial partners. -

Life on Earth depends on solar energy captured by plants - they are the base of most food webs and underpin the functioning of all major ecosystems. Plants release the oxygen we breath. They convert solar energy into chemical energy, providing us with food, fibres, renewable energy sources, and raw materials for many industries. Plants do not carry out these processes in isolation. They interact with other organisms and the physical and chemical environment, communicate and actively adjust to their circumstances. How do they do these things at molecular, physiological and functional levels and how can we profit from understanding that? When you have graduated from the Master’s Programme in Integrative Plant Sciences you will have the current answers, based on cutting-edge research by our scientists, to these big questions, and more. -

Master Programme in Biology, Animal Ecology Programme overview Master's Programme, 2 Years, Full time Code: LU-18018 120 credits Lund Campus Study period: 03 Sep 2012 – 06 Jun 2014 On the Master`s programme in Animal Ecology you will learn how to analyse and understand evolutionary processes at the level of genes, individuals and populations. You will achieve skills in analysing and understanding how evolutionary and ecological processes form appearance, physiology and behaviour in animals. You will also learn how to analyse costs and benefits of different traits and how these are optimised to form reproductive and survival strategies. We offer an excellent research environment, particularly in topics such as animal migration, molecular ecology, life history trade-offs, disease resistance in natural populations and host-parasite interactions. You will use modern field and laboratory methods in studies of ecological and evolutionary issues applied on animals in basic research, as well as applied conservation-related research. Special emphasis is on birds as model systems. Special features of the programme Evolutionary theory applied to ecological problems Close connections to research in an international environment Integration of theoretical analyses with strong training of laboratory skills and experience in field work Testing of evolutionary hypotheses Career prospects The knowledge and skills you will gain on this programme open doors to employment within many sectors in academia and the public sector. The programme provides you with a solid grounding for PhD studies. Employment can be found within agencies concerned with environmental protection, education and within academia through research funding. -
