MA in the Classical Archaeology and the Ancient History of Macedonia
The International Hellenic University is Greece’s first state university, where programmes are taught exclusively in English. It already attracts a strong international academic faculty and outstanding students from Southeast and other European and Black Sea countries. As a State University, all degrees awarded are accredited by the Government and are recognized in the European Union and internationally.
The programme considers the history and the archaeology of ancient Macedonia, covering the region of Macedonia and the Macedonians from the Mycenaean period until the Roman era.
Core modules: The historical sources (written sources, inscriptions, coins) | Ancient History (Archaic and Classical periods) | Institutions of the Macedonian Kingdom | Languages and dialects in Macedonia | Ancient Art (monumental art) | The East before and after Alexander the Great
Elective modules (you can choose four): Historical Geography and Cartography of ancient Macedonia | The Prehistoric and Archaic Macedonia | Archaeological sites of Macedonia 1 (the colonies) | Archaeological sites of Macedonia 2 (the cities of the Kingdom) | Ancient History (Roman Period) | Ancient Art (metalworking, statuettes, etc.) | Cults and beliefs | The Hellenistic Kingdoms | Excavation
Excavation: An important part of the students’ education on this MA will be their participation in a training excavation to be organised by the International Hellenic University within the specific framework of the MA. Guided excursions, international workshops, special lectures and team projects by the students will also play a significant role. The teaching staff will include top specialists in research relevant to Macedonia, from both Greece and abroad.
