Introduction
Joining this course will provide the opportunity to develop a wide range of intellectual, practical and transferable skills that will allow students to follow careers in research, industry and other professional areas of the economy. Course graduates will have an awareness of the state of the art practice of mechanical engineering and will be equipped to assume leading roles as professional engineers across a wide range of the mechanical engineering industry.
Course Description
The course will provide the opportunity for graduate mechanical engineers to both widen and deepen their knowledge across a spectrum of important topics. It is a broadly based programme which will allow participants to further their understanding of traditional mechanical engineering subjects whilst expanding the boundaries of their expertise into subjects that reflect Cardiff School of Engineering’s specialist research interests. The mode of study will be full-time only. Applicants seeking part-time study are directed to the School’s Professional Engineering programme which has been specifically established to meet such requirements.
The programme will prepare students for entry into a research-based or engineering-based career. It is intended that the programme will be submitted to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers to be approved for Further Learning, and be an exemplifying academic award for Chartered Engineering status. In addition to technical skills, students will acquire professional skills such as effective communication to technical, management and non-technical audiences, project planning, evaluation and prioritisation.
Mechanical Engineering at Cardiff
The programme will allow graduate engineers to join the Cardiff School of Engineering which is ranked among the top ten combined engineering schools in the UK. They will be integrated into an environment where research is seen as a collaborative and innovative enterprise involving students, industrial partners, research organisations and other universities. Within the School, multidisciplinary research institutes provide a strong framework to sustain our dynamic leading-edge research culture. This reflects the needs of a modern society where artificial boundaries between engineering disciplines are unimportant and what is needed are engineers with the vision and skills necessary to tackle problems and provide solutions.
Mechanical engineering research in Cardiff is focussed on the development of innovative, advanced and environmentally friendly technology, together with its effective and sustainable implementation. Research areas currently develop hardware, software or management systems for applications within the transport, energy generation and manufacturing industries. Close involvement with industry ensures that research has both relevance and meaning, working with some of the world’s most renowned engineering companies. Partners include Airbus, BAe Systems, Bosch, Tata Steel, Daimler, EADS, Fiat, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Messier-Dowty, Mitutoyo, Network Rail TWI, Parametric Technology, Physical Acoustics, Renault, Rolls-Royce, SAP, Siemens, Silicon Graphics, Stile Bertone, The Highways Agency, TRL, Microchip, and WS Atkins. This research has benefited from major strategic investment, including £2.4M into the Cardiff University Structural Performance (CUSP) laboratory and collaborative industrial partnerships. This forms part of the very impressive research and teaching facilities available within the School which will be the focus of key elements in this course.
Participants in this programme will be offered the opportunity to become part of this exciting and relevant research that will be presented during the conduct of the course modules and will be extended through the completion of a master’s level project that will be conducted within a research area of their choosing. This will provide an excellent basis for a future career in research as well as preparation for successful roles in the industry.
