Rutgers School of Engineering’s Master degree programs are aimed at students interested in furthering their knowledge in a particular engineering discipline for industrial and research advancement. Curriculum
Advancing Engineering Leaders
Rutgers School of Engineering provides students with a strong technical background and prepares them for leadership careers in exciting and challenging professions. Both our teaching and research are firmly rooted in scientific principles while incorporating knowledge of today’s challenges.
- Master of Science (MS)
Students in the Master of Science Civil and Environmental Engineering program at Rutgers tackle issues of global importance in order to develop solutions for a sustainable economy and environment. Our faculty members are recognized innovators in areas such as infrastructure evaluation and monitoring, intelligent transportation systems, transportation design and planning, geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, pavement engineering, construction management, water resources management, and air pollution monitoring and control.
They provide leadership on several prominent national projects, including working with the Federal Highway Administration to develop a revolutionary robot that can diagnose and manage the health of bridges by automating data collection and deploying multiple nondestructive evaluation technologies. In addition, students and faculty work directly with Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation, one of only ten University Transportation Centers sanctioned and supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Program graduates are well-positioned for career success, as designers and creators of infrastructures from bridges, highways, and airports to sewage treatment facilities, towers, and tunnels.

Degree Options
CEE students have a thesis or non-thesis Master of Science or Master of Engineering degree option. All students are free to choose between the two options, except graduate assistants who are required to take the thesis option.
MS (thesis): 30 Course Credits
Program requirements include at least 30 credits, including 24 credits of coursework and a 6-credit thesis and oral defense.
MS (thesis, non-thesis): 30 Course Credits
Program requirements include at least 30 credits, including 24 credits of coursework and a 6-credit thesis and oral defense (thesis) or 6 additional credits of course or project work and a writing requirement (non-thesis).
