The MA in Classics & Ancient Civilizations: Classics offers a broad approach to Antiquity through the integration of classical languages and ancient cultural history. We have strong expertise in Hellenistic literature, Greek linguistics, Greek religion, Latin poetry of the early Empire, and Literature in its spatial and socio-cultural context. We also provide excellent teaching: two of the staff members were already elected Lecturers of the Year. You are going to study in a relatively small and friendly community, with an internationally research-oriented climate, at a vibrant university city with many international students.

This fascinating course examines many different aspects of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds – their literature, history, archaeology, languages and material culture – through a scholarly tradition that is both fast-moving and long-standing. You'll investigate the different disciplinary areas within Classical Studies, and you will come into direct contact with a wide range of evidence from classical antiquity including literary texts and material artefacts, which you’ll examine from multiple theoretical and methodological perspectives. You will also acquire and develop research skills that will enhance your knowledge of the ancient Greco-Roman world and prepare you for independent study, culminating in a dissertation.

The MA in Classical World and Its Reception course explores the way the Classical world has been reflected in the art, literature and culture of later periods, and how the ancient world has shaped the modern. The course is interdisciplinary and is open to students with no prior knowledge of ancient languages.
