Film is the most important mass medium and art form of modern times. Shaping our modes of perception and communication, it is popular in its appeal and radical in its practices. It has transformed our ways of seeing and storytelling. Film-making and criticism are areas of immense interest, pleasure, and creativity.

This course examines the principles of short-form film-making, the potential of visual storytelling and the importance of sound, lighting and screenplay.

This course will develop your understanding of the central role cinema has played, and continues to play, in shaping our world. You will be able to research a variety of areas, including Film and Philosophy, Gender and Sexuality, British Cinema from the 1960s to the present day, and Film and Adaptation. You will also be introduced to the main areas of debate in the history of film theory and criticism.

This course explores how music creates atmosphere, conveys mood and depicts setting, character and action. You will examine the relationships between composer and producer, directors and music editors. You will study the technology used to produce high-quality soundtracks as well as business and copyright issues. Through optional modules, you will be able to tailor the course to your interests.

The program offers a thorough grounding in postgraduate-level film. We are happy to consider applications from applicants with a background in either film or a related humanities subject.

The MA Film with Practice is a taught program suitable for graduates in film, practitioners who want to advance their practice in an intellectually stimulating environment and non-film graduates with a passion for film practice demonstrated though amateur filmmaking.
