Curatorial practice entails the selection and representation of cultural objects, ideas, and artifacts by organising and promoting art projects and exhibitions. At its core, this practice is rooted in the understanding and inculcation of values associated with social and cultural history, and a sensitivity to multiple forms of spectatorship. At Srishti Manipal we consider the curatorial practice to be not only about the exhibition, selection, and display but an endeavor towards reflecting cultural practices that address contemporary social concerns. The MA in Curatorial Practice is founded on the premise that there is no separation between practice and theory in curatorial work. Curators operate across a vast ecology of contexts and spaces - from the museum to the commercial gallery, to the artist-led space, to the festival, to the lab, to new creative ventures and academic projects. The role of the curator often blends in with that of the researcher, the artist, the publisher, the activist, the archivist, and the creative entrepreneur. The program foregrounds an inquiry-based approach to learning, where students can explore and develop personal discourse, artistic visions, and ideas through their chosen lines of inquiry, navigating through frames of thought nurtured at Srishti Manipal. The students of the MA in Curatorial Practice will acquire the criticality, skills, and flexibility to work in the ever-changing context of the contemporary art world and cultural production. They will develop an awareness and understanding of international and national socio-cultural and political discourses in the field.

Animation is a dynamic, participatory, and transdisciplinary medium of expression and communication. It finds its application across media and in diverse contexts, be it in short films, art installations, infographics, education, apps, and many more. The modes of production are many and the lines between live-action, animation, and computer-generated imagery have become increasingly blurred. At Srishti Manipal, we consider animation a broad range of practices in manipulated moving images. The animation program is a learning space for self-driven students who are keen on pursuing a line of inquiry and developing their practice in moving-image arts. The MA program provides a framework to support research and the taking forward of one’s practice in animation to newer levels of fluency and sophistication. The curriculum provides strategic inputs in research methods, animation techniques, film language, storytelling, image-making processes, and several opportunities for independent skill enhancement. Students can explore and develop personal styles, artistic visions, and voices depending on their particular lines of inquiry. The focus is on achieving ease and expertise in using the language of animation to pose relevant questions and address diverse topics of interest.

The world after seeing several decades of progress to uplift millions of people from abject poverty is seeing an increase of inequality exacerbated by climate change-induced events that even question the continued existence of humanity. The conditions of work and equality in an agency at work still have a way to go whether proscribed by gender, social status, or access to capital. Slavery was abolished two centuries ago only to be replaced by what linguist Noam Chomsky and others describe as wage slavery. “Experience demonstrates that there may be a slavery of wages only a little less galling and crushing in its effects than chattel slavery and that this slavery of wages must go down with the other”. Frederick Douglas 1888. The industrial revolution in many ways switched chattel slavery to wage slavery where producers and employees are excluded from decision making and are not permitted to apply themselves creatively to realize their limitless innate potential.
