Introduction
Technical expertise is indispensable in taxation.
But for Gabelli School graduates, it’s only the beginning.
Tax laws change, budgets rise and fall, corporate strategies adjust. Taxation professionals need a finely honed set of technical skills to stay on top of this ever-changing field. But if you ask Gabelli School graduates for the secret of their success, they’ll tell you it’s about much more than mastery of the latest tax code.
The way to stand out—and move up—in this competitive field is to cultivate superior communication skills, creative problem-solving techniques, solid business instincts, and a clear-eyed view of moral and social responsibility.
At Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business, we teach every discipline—no matter how technical—with a unique emphasis on interpersonal and business skills. Our Master of Science in Taxation (MST) is no exception.
Full-time and part-time options
The MST has two schedule choices:
- A one-year full-time program
- A part-time program spread over a longer time frame, such as two years—ideal for professionals who don’t want to leave their jobs while they pursue the degree
About the degree
The MST curriculum teaches skills in general tax, international tax, estate and gift tax, accounting, and communications. It allows students to define a minor area of concentration by taking electives in subjects that interest them. As a Jesuit university, Fordham offers a unique focus on ethical decision-making and social responsibility.
The Gabelli School edge
At the Gabelli School, we don’t think anyone should wait until graduation to start networking. Our students begin making crucial connections with taxation experts the day they arrive on our campus in the heart of Manhattan. That’s because our MST program is taught by top professionals in New York’s financial sector—professionals who could one day become your employer.
Students also attend guest-speaker presentations organized by the Fordham Accounting and Tax Society (FAcTS), giving them plenty of opportunities to make an impression on New York’s most successful executives while gaining in-depth exposure to a variety of possible career paths.
Ideal candidates
Thanks to its flexible schedule, the Gabelli School MST program is a great choice for professional accountants, attorneys, and business executives who want to specialize in taxation. The degree can also supplement an undergraduate degree in public accounting, offering an edge over your less specialized peers and helping you to meet the credit requirement to sit for the New York State CPA examination. (Visit www.nasba.org to see if the MST, combined with your baccalaureate degree, would satisfy the New York State CPA requirements.)
