Students can complete a Master of Commerce through 2 years of full-time study - even less if you're a business graduate. Online and flexible learning options are also available.

The Master of Commerce caters to students from many different backgrounds and is highly student-centred and flexible in its design, allowing you to choose from specialisation sequences from a range of business disciplines.

How you will learn

The Master of Commerce is available:

  • at the Melbourne City campus, offering up to two intakes a year
  • online, offering up to six intakes a year.


Classes may be held during the evenings, or as full day or weekend sessions at the Melbourne City campus. The exact format varies from course to course. Students might be required to undertake solo or group work, and independent study and project work outside of teaching periods.

RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work. In addition, you will have access to online and digital resources such as lecture notes, assessment tools, discussion boards and podcasts through myRMIT.

College of Business educational software, the Learning Hub, other online and digital resources and printers are accessible on campus via the RMIT wireless network using your own laptop, tablet or smart phone or via computer facilities on-campus. You will be able to access the same software from home using myDesktop.

Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, presentations, group projects, research projects, quizzes and tests, blog journals and practical assignments.

RMIT Online

Delivered 100 per cent online, you can take advantage of six intensive study periods offered each year, and learn wherever there is an internet connection. RMIT’s community-based online study lets you investigate new ideas through video, audio, and practical activities and assessments. In virtual meeting spaces and by participating in discussions forums, you will connect, interact and collaborate with expert lecturers and other professionals studying alongside you. Through myRMIT on-campus and online students can view online resources and learning activities created by lecturers, access course materials via Blackboard, collaborate with lecturers and fellow students, and access their student email account.

Industry connections

Guiding the development of the College of Business, both nationally and internationally, is an Industry Advisory Board of high-profile executives chaired by Gerhard Vorster, Chief Strategy Officer, Deloitte. The Board creates a strategic bridge between the latest in technology and design thinking and business.

International opportunities

Study tours are a unique feature of the on-campus programmeme. You can combine an overseas travel and cultural experience with coursework completed in intensive mode and have this credited towards your degree. They depart during the Australian summer or winter vacations and are usually undertaken in the final semester of the master degree.

If you are planning to include a study tour as part of your programme, you are advised to check that you have the required number of student electives or credit points available.

Other global mobility options available for the on-campus programme include:

Master of Commerce students may seek entry with advanced standing into the Master of Science in Management offered by Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.



  • 1.5 years full-time or part-time equivalent (with advanced standing)
  • 2 years full-time or part-time equivalent (without advanced standing)

RMIT Online

  • 2 years part-time (intensive online) (with advanced standing)

Depending on your previous studies and experience you could also be eligible for credit towards your programme. Credit granted may reduce the amount of study you need to complete.


Graduates may work in a variety of fields like management, finance, marketing, logistics and supply chain, business IT, hospitality, education and health sectors, depending on the specialist sequences or electives you select.

  • and positions in banking, insurance and stockbroking.


An Australian bachelor degree or equivalent, or higher level qualification, in a business (or related) discipline from a recognised tertiary institution; or

An Australian bachelor degree or equivalent in any discipline from a recognised tertiary institution and a minimum of three years full-time equivalent management experience*; or

The RMIT Graduate Certificate of Commerce.

* Applicants will be required to submit a curriculum vitae (CV).

Study on campus

  • Full-fee: AU$30,720* per annum.

Study online

  • 2019 full-fee: AU$3,840 per 12 credit point course.
  • 2018 full-fee: AU$3,720 per 12 credit point course.

The indicative annual tuition fee for full-fee places in 2018 is AU$23,040.

This programme is offered on a full-fee paying basis only. If you are offered a place, you will need to pay the full tuition costs of your programme. However, eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) may apply to defer payment of some or all of their tuition fees via the Commonwealth Government’s FEE-HELP loan scheme.

*Fees shown above apply to 2019 only and are based on an annual full-time study load of 96 credit points unless otherwise noted. A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load. Tuition fees are adjusted on an annual basis and these fees should only be used as a guide.
