Curriculum
What is the focus of the program?
Our one-year, writing- and editing-focused program will prepare you to make a contribution to any publication. You will take courses in:
- Writing.
- Reporting.
- Editing.
- Web and graphic design.
- Research.
- Communications law.
- Other courses cover web innovation; political and urban affairs; sports reporting; new media business; travel writing; designing interactivity; and photography.
Magazine, news and digital journalism graduate students may also pursue the Sports Media and Communications Track.
What will I do and experience as an MND master’s student?
We pride ourselves on innovation and engaging class work. Our professors work hard to make sure the time you spend in the classroom is time well spent. It’s here that you are provided the skills and institutional knowledge of the industry that will prepare you for the field.
You may intern at a local media outlet, or choose a track in sports media and communications. You can also get involved with one of dozens of campus media outlets, including The Daily Orange, Syracuse University’s independent student newspaper, and The NewsHouse, Newhouse’s award-winning, student-run multimedia news site. Our students have won awards for work published in The Washington Post, The Atlantic Poynter and other high-profile publications.
Scholarships and Funding
Various scholarships, fellowships and instructional associate positions are awarded to incoming Newhouse students to help offset the cost of attendance. Since Newhouse does have limited funding to offer, the majority of these awards are partial and only applicable for the academic year (excluding the summer sessions). It is also a competitive process, and all awards are merit-based.
The Newhouse Diversity Fellowship is a highly competitive 18-month program that provides two generous awards each year to minority students who have majored in subjects other than journalism as undergraduates. It is supported by the Newhouse Foundation, a private foundation established by Samuel I. Newhouse.
