Introduction

The Master's in Management is a three-semester program, fully taught in English, that offers three specialization areas: Tourism Management; Healthcare Management; Marine and Maritime Management. This Master's program is open to applicants from all backgrounds but is primarily aimed at students who have not previously studied business and management.* *In edition 2021/2022 the Master’s in Management will offer specialization areas in Tourism Management and Healthcare Management (opening of the areas is subject to a minimum number of students - 8) The Master's in Management is fully accredited by the Portuguese Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education. Such accreditation is based on the recognition of the excellence of the program’s Faculty (scientific research and teaching practices), as well as on the exceptional quality of the School’s facilities and equipment.

Objectives

Our Master in Management is designed to develop the necessary skills to foster different ways of thinking, and different ways of viewing and understanding organizations in the areas of tourism management, healthcare management, and/or marine and maritime management. Simultaneously, it is expected that the Master's program promotes the creation and dissemination of scientific research with national and international recognition in this important area of knowledge. The study program also intends to ensure internships and career opportunities based on established partnerships.

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Reinforce both an academic and a professional background in Management in the specialization areas of tourism, healthcare, and marine management
  • Work as part of a team and develop independent work using critical thinking and creativity to solve complex business problems in the economy and society
  • Acquire the habit of thinking in global terms and lay the foundations of a personal network of contacts
  • Acquire communication, interaction, and team working skills
  • Develop a research project and develop independent and autonomous research

The curriculum is composed of 7 required courses and 3 elective courses. Students will have five required courses in the first semester and two required courses in the second semester together with 3 electives. In the third semester of the program, all students will be required to write a dissertation, internship, or project report. A detailed syllabus of each course is provided in the subsection "Course Structure" in the menu above.

Admission requirements

Conditions of Access

  • Holders of a bachelor’s degree awarded by a Portuguese Higher Education Institution, whose curriculum reveals an adequate scientific background
  • Holders of a bachelor’s degree awarded by a foreign Higher Education Institution that is in accordance with the principles of the Bologna process, and whose curriculum reveals an adequate scientific background
  • Holders of a foreign higher education degree that is deemed by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Economics as complying with the objectives of a bachelor's degree
  • Holders of an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum that the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Economics deems relevant to attend this master's program
  • Seniors attending degrees like those identified in points a) and b) can also apply. These students must have at least 138 approved ECTS at the date of their application and must be able to graduate by the end of July of the academic year in which they apply. Applications by Seniors are conditional until graduation
  • Attending this master's program requires a good command of the English language, both spoken and written
  • Points c) and d) above are not an equivalence of a bachelor's degree nor the recognition of such a degree by the University of the Algarve

  • University Degree Certificate and Academic Results Transcripts:
    • Documents in English, Portuguese, Spanish, or French do not require translation. Documents in any other language must be translated into English or Portuguese
    • Documents issued in a country other than Portugal must be certified in that country by a notary under the Hague Apostille Convention or by the Portuguese Consulate
    • Graduates from foreign institutions must present an official declaration, issued by the Higher Education Institution where they completed their first degree that includes their final classification as well as the respective scale used. This declaration must be written in Portuguese or English and duly validated by the competent entity

Scholarships & funding

As we are a public university, no studentships are available for Bachelor, Master, or Ph.D. degrees, independently of the student's nationality. Nevertheless, for the second academic year (thesis research) there is a possibility to apply for a studentship in research projects running in our science and technology centers. You can apply for a studentship while completing your first academic year of the Master but we cannot guarantee that there will be funding for all students for the second research year.

Merit Scholarships

For the upcoming academic year, Merit Scholarships will be made available by the Faculty for the most outstanding candidates enrolling in the program. Merit Scholarships will only cover the program tuition fee. You must first apply for admission before you can apply for the scholarship. All conditions for awarding Merit Scholarships are provided in the "Regulation for the Award of Merit Scholarships".

To apply for Merit Scholarship, it is necessary to complete the application form together with the required documents.

Tuition

  • National Students: 2200 Euros (1st year - 1100 Euros; 2nd year - 1100 Euros)
  • International Students*: 4250 Euros (1st year - 2500 Euros; 2nd year - 1750 Euros)
  • Application Fee: 50 Euros
  • Registration Fee and School Insurance: 175 Euros

Note: The tuition of this course can be paid in 10 installments, the first at the time of registration

* in accordance with Decree-Law No. 36/2014, changed by Decree-Law No.62/2018, of 6th August, international students are nationals of a country that is not a Member State of the European Union and are not a legal resident in Portugal for more than 2 uninterrupted years by 1st of January of the enrollment year.

Career paths

Tourism Management, Healthcare Management, and Marine and Maritime Management are emerging fields within Management. The increasing interest in these fields of study is due largely to their growing importance to the socio-economic development of regions and countries. Thus the job opportunities for graduates in these sectors are, in general, very promising.

This Master's prepares graduates for a wide range of potential careers in Tourism Management, Healthcare Management, and Marine and Maritime Management. Among others, they can be mentioned the following roles: auditing/accounting, general management, operations management, human resources management, marketing, strategic planning, working for a family business or even setting up their own business.
