Introduction
The University of Bayreuth
The University of Bayreuth is a dynamic, research-oriented campus university. Established in 1975 as one of the first universities in Germany with an interdisciplinary founding mission, it is now considered a pioneer in innovative research and teaching. With the strength of its core subject areas and its strategically chosen focus areas, the University offers its about 13,500 students from Germany and abroad an ideal learning environment, close supervision, and attractive, internationally oriented programmes of study that are held entirely in English.
The University of Bayreuth is considered to be among the best young universities in the world, as can be seen by its position in the Times Higher Education (THE) worldwide ranking of universities “under 50”. The University of Bayreuth has an impressive international network, and responds to social changes and processes with innovations that continue to set new standards. For this reason, interdisciplinary thinking is not limited to the collaborative work carried out on our unique green campus. It is also a key element in our many interdisciplinary programmes of study. There are currently around 13,500 students enrolled in around 150 different programmes of study offered by the University’s seven faculties.
The University of Bayreuth focuses on interdisciplinary research and offers excellent opportunities thanks to its modern research bodies and first-class research infrastructure. The University of Bayreuth is happily one of the most popular German universities among foreign researchers and is regularly included among the leaders in the Humboldt rankings.
It has been an international leader in African Studies for many years; the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) is part of our Excellence Cluster “Africa Multiple”, funded by the German federal and state governments. High Pressure & High Temperature Research carried out at the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry & Geophysics also have established a strong reputation worldwide. Polymer research at the University is a frontrunner in the funding ranking published by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The University of Bayreuth has a tight international network of strategically selected university partnerships.
The University offers its students and researchers a teaching and research environment with plenty of room for creativity, thereby positioning itself in the area of tension between academic freedom, scientific progress, practice orientation, and social and cultural responsibility.
