The University of Groningen has a rich academic tradition dating back to 1614. From this tradition arose the first female student and the first female lecturer in the Netherlands, the first Dutch astronaut and the first president of the European Central Bank. The University of Groningen is a top 100 research university with a global outlook. We are currently ranked 75th in the Times Higher Education ranking and offer over 30 English-taught Bachelor's programs and over 125 Master's programs. Founded in 1614, the university is one of the oldest research universities in the Netherlands. We are a truly international university, with over 36,000 students and 9,000 international students from over 120 different nationalities.

Truly international: We are known for our large international community. Nearly 6,000 international students study in Groningen annually from over 120 countries. Living in Groningen without speaking Dutch is not a problem; you will be able to order food, shop for clothes, and even take sports classes in English. The University of Groningen has strong international connections, which means that you can easily spend part of your degree studying abroad. We also offer several unique international Master’s programs in cooperation with other large European universities.

We offer over 30 English-taught Bachelor's programs. Nine of our Bachelor's programs have been awarded the "Top Degree Program" quality label.

At the moment the University of Groningen offers over 125 English-taught Master's programs, 18 of which are rated as “Top Rated Program” in the Netherlands.

Campus Fryslân

The University of Groningen has three campuses spread out over two cities. In Groningen, 11 faculties are based in 150 different buildings around the city, across two campuses.

If you study within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, or the Faculty of Economics and Business, you will probably attend classes at the Zernike campus in the north of the city.

For the faculties of Behavioural and Social Sciences, Theology and Religious Studies, Arts, Medical Sciences, Law, Spatial Sciences, Philosophy, and University College Gronigen, the buildings are spread out across the centre of the city.

In Leeuwarden, a city nearby Groningen, you can find Campus Fryslân. This is a unique faculty as multiple disciplines are represented within the faculty.

Groningen is a city with a large student population which can often make finding accommodation a challenge. Students live throughout the city in different types of accommodation. These vary in price and include shared housing with other students, individual studios or apartments and with SSH - the city's independent student housing provider. The University of Groningen is not a campus university and does not offer campus accommodation. Therefore, you will need to find your own accommodation. The earlier you find accommodation, the better.

    Great Base

    Groningen makes an ideal base from which to launch your travel adventures. For open space and fresh air, you can go and explore the seaside or one of the Dutch islands - located just 40 km from the city centre. Most of the Netherlands, including Amsterdam, and several large German cities such as Hamburg, Bremen and Dortmund are reachable by train, car or bus in just a few hours.
