Introduction
Global Forestry (GLOFOR) is a two-year English language world-class Erasmus Mundus MSc program that prepares graduates to deal with forestry’s tremendous contemporary challenges and potentials in dealing with the problems of biodiversity protection, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and the development of a circular bio-economy.
Why global forestry?
Deforestation and forest degradation account for 10-15% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, contribute massively to the global loss of biodiversity and undermine the livelihoods of millions of people who depend heavily on forests and the uncultivated environment for their livelihoods.
These processes predominantly take place in middle and low-income countries in the Global South. However, the causes of deforestation and forest degradation are complex and linked to climate change, poverty and profit-driven agricultural expansion, unsustainable logging, unjust distributions of forest and land rights, and the lack of effective mechanisms to conserve nature without undermining rural livelihoods.
On the other hand, forest resources hold great potential. Indeed, a global transformation towards an equitable and green economy will not be possible unless forests in medium and low-income countries come under sustainable forms of utilization and protection.

Scholarships and Funding
Erasmus Mundus Scholarship
The Erasmus Mundus Scholarship is awarded to the best students admitted each year to the programme from all over the world.
The scholarship amounts to a maximum of 33,600 € (1400 € per month for up to 24 months).
All scholarship holders are granted a tuition fee waiver.
To be eligible for the scholarship you must
- Comply with the Erasmus Mundus Mobility Rules
- And be a full-time student in the programme.
Erasmus Mundus Mobility Rules
All Erasmus Mundus Scholarships must comply with the Erasmus Mundus Mobility Rules throughout the 2-year programme.

Curriculum
Global Forestry offers a truly integrated study program fully recognized in all the participating countries. When students have acquired 120 ECTS at least two Consortium institutions (at least 30 ECTS at each) they will obtain a Global Forestry Double Degree and the Diploma Supplement.
1st year
Students get a thorough introduction to forestry’s local and global role in middle and low-income countries during their first year. All students complete their first semester in Copenhagen, where faculty from all partner universities join the teaching activities.
During February, the first year, all students and one teacher from each partner university participate in a joint field course in a middle or low-income country. Then, students move to either Dresden or Padua to complete their first year.
2nd year
For the second year of studies, the students pursue a specialization in one of the five partner universities:
- Copenhagen – Livelihoods and Governance
- Dresden – Management and Policy
- Kourou & Montpellier – Tropical Forest Ecology
- Padua – Social and Environmental Responsibility
- Prague – Agroforestry Systems

Career Opportunities
GLOFOR graduates will be well prepared to immediately apply for a job in global forestry, natural resources management, and nature conservation sectors, e.g. in international organizations, consultancy companies, private enterprises in the forest and wood-related sectors, NGOs, development agencies, State and Regional Forest Services. Graduated students will have also the opportunities to start a PhD program within the 5 PhD Schools of the Consortium or elsewhere.
