With this in mind, the second cycle in Molecular and Cell Biology places a strong emphasis on the study of genomes, cellular regulation and development, and molecular evolution. There are significant theoretical-practical and practical strands to the study programs which allow participants to extend their knowledge base and acquire laboratory training in the methods of modern Molecular and Cell Biology. There is a further component focusing on Bio-business that should help the transfer of knowledge acquired during the second cycle to the market place, and the setting up of biotechnology micro companies. Molecular and Cell Biology is one of the cornerstones of biotechnology and with a solid training in this area, graduates should be well prepared to set up micro companies to operate in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. The growing use of new molecular and genetic diagnostic tools in the national health service and in the food industry means there is a call for professionals with a solid training in the biomolecular sciences. The 2nd cycle in Molecular and Cell Biology at Aveiro was designed with the intention of preparing professionals for the field with competences in modern methods for the analysis of genes and genomes, RNA, proteins and other biomolecules that are of importance in clinical diagnostics and food safety.

The Study Cycle is intended for the professional qualification for teaching Biology and Geology in the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education and in Secondary Education regulated by Decree-Law No. 79/2014, of 14 May. The entry conditions are set out in n.º 25 of the Annex to this Decree-Law (as to the ECTS required to be held) and in Article 17 (regarding the mandatory performance of the Written and Oral Portuguese Language Exams).

With this second cycle course in Comparative and Technological Molecular Genetics, we intend to transmit essential knowledge related to recent advances in the area of ​​comparison of genomes and DNA manipulation technologies, both in animal and plant organisms.

This innovative cycle of studies offers solid theoretical training in Marine Biology and in the Conservation of Marine Ecosystems, core areas of research for the members of the course's teaching team. Thus, the knowledge generated in the scope of excellence research at ISPA in these areas of knowledge, specifically in the scope of MARE - Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences, a research unit in the area of ​​the sea that brings together more than 400 researchers from six Portuguese universities, recently classified as “Excellent” in the latest assessment by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), is translated into a course plan centered on providing skills that allow a complete and integrated understanding of the functioning of marine ecosystems.
