The master's programme provides knowledge and skills in a modern or classical language and culture.

The master’s program in Teaching French as a Foreign Language (FLE) is both research-based and profession-oriented. The training offered provides students with essential tools for the analysis of teaching situations as well as practical tools that enable intervention in professional sectors related to the teaching process.

The MA in French Culture is designed for student who have already mastered the French language and wish to take their experience and knowledge one step further. Introductory and advanced courses will cover the linguistic and cultural aspects.

On a more advanced level (Master’s studies) students are encouraged to collaborate with us in our fields of expertise, i.e. the Contemporary French Novel; Autobiography; Contemporary French Theatre, and Francophone Literature, in order to develop their capacities for research and critical thought. The French Department’s Master’s is designed for dedicated researchers and mainly consists of a dissertation or a thesis.

The Master in French Language and Literature will perfect your skills in French and will give you the opportunity to develop an analytical framework in French linguistics and literature. You will benefit from the teaching of recognized specialists, who will guide you in their field of expertise towards the development of a personal research project.

An acceptable level of proficiency in English or Afrikaans is a requisite.

The MA by thesis

The specialty of the French language operates about 19 years at the faculty of International Relations and Foreign Languages.Currently, 55 students study the French language in the I-IV courses. The specialty of the German language was established in 1999-2000 academic year and 15 students were accepted to the specialty in the same year.
