The environmental impact of the use of fossil fuels and the uncertainties in their sources of supply have led to many alternative energy sources being investigated. But of these, only nuclear fission power is at present sufficiently developed to provide an economically viable alternative to fossil fuels.

The Nuclear System Safety Engineering Course curriculum is designed to equip human resources with the motivation and leadership skills required to ensure nuclear safety by system safety engineering. Based on the diverse disciplines, theoretical and practical studies on nuclear safety are made to enhance the system safety approach. Practical courses are also offered to students to help develop skills to communicate with non-experts and ordinary citizens.

The course is oriented towards nuclear physics and elementary particle physics i.e. disciplines presenting fundamental facts about the structure of matter and principal interactions of the microworld. However, many findings have surpassed the realm of physics and found their place in many fields of human activities. The structure of the degree course comprises advanced topics of quantum field theory, particle physics, systems of detectors, and data processing.

The program aims to train high-level experts to meet current and future needs of the nuclear industry: performance optimization of the current reactor fleet, design of third-generation facilities, development of advanced processes and Generation IV reactors, operation of current reactors and facilities, dismantling of facilities, reprocessing of spent fuel, nuclear waste management, etc.
