The department offers clinical psychology programs for those who wish to pursue a career in that field. This program is conducted at a graduate school certified by the Foundation of the Japanese Certification Board for Clinical Psychologists. The curriculum also allows students to take the courses necessary to obtain certification as a certified psychologist. This program trains capable clinical psychologists and Certified Public Psychologists who can provide appropriate psychological support and conduct research in various areas such as “public health,” “welfare services,” “education,” Studies in Clinical Psychology“law & crime,” and “industry & labor” in the future. Students will study various therapy techniques such as psychoanalytic psychotherapy, client-centered therapy, analytical psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and family therapy, and they will learn through practice in a number of cases under a system of close supervision. In addition, a major feature of this program is its system of postgraduate school education. This program fosters personnel with a dynamic perspective who are proficient in psychotherapy and projective tests. Moreover, graduates have a roughly 100% rate of employment, and about 95% of previous graduates have been certified as clinical psychologists.

The Department of Education and Clinical Psychology is dedicated to training graduates to support and assist others while contributing to character formation and care through the comprehensive study of the two fields of education and clinical psychology. To that end, students study knowledge and techniques in pedagogy and clinical psychology, including subjects such as mental health, stress management, self-understanding, lifelong learning, and career development. Starting during their second year, students choose from three courses-Teacher, Certified Clinical Psychologist, and Career Design -and then focus their studies on the more specialized and practical theory and skills based on their chosen future career. Each model offers internship opportunities in such settings as schools, hospitals, and social welfare facilities where clinical psychology is practiced, and private-sector companies and NPOs. The Departmentʼs goal is to prepare students to thrive in society while taking advantage of comprehensive, practical skills using the knowledge and techniques of pedagogy and clinical psychology.

This program provides the necessary educational research to educational psychology professionals, giving students a comprehensive perspective on the human psyche, and the knowledge, skills, and analytic ability related to specific areas of clinical psychology. It conforms to the basic model of courses for training clinical psychologists, with an expanded curriculum. The Seitoku University Graduate School has been designated as a first-category school by the Japanese Certification Board for Clinical Psychologists.

The master’s course consists of the Master’s Program in Social Welfare and the Master’s Program in Clinical Psychology. In academic 2015, the master's course was modified to offer comprehensive practical social welfare training/education as well as teaching to build advanced expertise and skills in individual academic fields. The Center for Practice and Research of Clinical Psychology was opened for the latter, thereby establishing a system appropriate for a Type 1-designated school for the education of clinical psychologists. For the Master’s Program in Clinical Psychology, curricular content regarding social psychology and developmental psychology from the previous Master’s Program in Social Psychology was incorporated and modified to provide a broader spectrum of education on psychological matters. The Master’s Program in Social Welfare integrates the previously separate domains of social policy and social work to provide students with broader and more in-depth expertise.

The Department of Psychology is dedicated to preparing students for a wide variety of careers through a program that provides a carefully calibrated balance of studies in a broad range of subject areas that present psychology as a living social discipline. The curriculum prepares students to take the licensed psychologist examination and paves the way for them to continue their studies at the graduate level, leading to a specialized career in psychology.

Students will be trained to be “certified clinical psychologists” who are able to understand from various angles the minds of people and to support them. Clinical practical training is compulsory in the first and second years. Including at HOKUSHO Clinical Psychology Center, students will have field experiences, such as at psychiatric hospitals, clinics of psychosomatic medicine, and welfare institutions. After the training, students aim to become certified clinical psychologists.

The Psychology Course examines the human mind and how it works amid social change and provides students with the opportunity to learn about the mechanisms of the mind from many angles. Collaborating with clinical psychology researchers, the course focuses on investigational research and fundamental experimentation on the human mind and behavior.

The Clinical Psychology Course shall organize its curriculum into four fields, namely “General Education”, “Basic Disciplines”, “Developmental Disciplines” and “Research Practical Training”. These four fields shall serve to educate students in advanced knowledge and practice for the purpose of cultivating a strong ethical view and a rich understanding and support of human beings as well as the ability to conduct research in clinical practice and to work as “professionals who advise and support matters of the mind”. The Clinical Psychology Course has been certified as a Type 1 Designated Graduate School by the Japanese Certification Board for Clinical Psychologists and the Course has established both core and elective curricula required for the Clinical Psychologist qualifying exam within the “Basic Fields” and the “Development Fields”.

Social science is more related to human behavior, including economics and law, it is a scientific study of human society and social relationships among individuals within a society. The study of Humanities and Social Sciences will require you to develop a wide range of skills. You will be able to question, solve problems, think critically, make decisions, communicate effectively as well as adapt to modify.

The goal of the Graduate School of Psychological Sciences is the education of highly capable professionals who will tackle various problems confronting modern society, such as child abuse and bullying at home or school; high rates of suicide and community crime; and accidents and disasters associated with the advancement of science and technology. For this purpose, the School has four policies that undergird its education and research: (1) use of the scientific approach; (2) practical applicability to the wider community; (3) interdisciplinary research; and (4) promotion of international exchange.

The School of Clinical Psychology makes full use of the education and research provided by the Department of Clinical Psychology, which helps students to gain an understanding of human nature and learn practical skills in mental health care. The school has two affiliated centers: Psychological Counselling Centre and Child Development Support Centre, where the post-graduates can have practical training in such fields as counseling and psychotherapy and put what they have learned into practice.
