Mendel University in Brno is the oldest independent specialized university in the Czech Republic. It was established as the University of Agriculture in Brno in 1919, and since 2010 it has been using the name Mendel University in Brno (MENDELU). The university proudly bears the name of J. G. Mendel, the founder of modern genetics, who conducted his famous experiments in Brno.

MENDELU is one of the Czech leading educational institutions in the sphere of life sciences. The university consists of five faculties – Faculty of AgriSciences, Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Horticulture, and Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies. In its modern laboratories academic staff deal not only with crop production and animal breeding but also with food production, agroecology, virtual reality or wood technology. In 2011, the establishment of an independent university institute CEITEC MENDELU within the Faculty of Agronomy incorporated the University into an international scientific centre of excellence, the Central European Institute of Technology.

The university offers a wide range of study programmes in English in both traditional and modern fields of study. MENDELU provide study programmes in agriculture, forestry and wood processing, horticulture, economics, informatics or international studies. The university uses the ECTS credit system which allows simple and clear recognition of subjects/study results. The academic year is divided into two semesters (winter and summer). Each contains 13 weeks of teaching, followed by a four/five-week examination period. Most programmes have a well-defined course structure and timing, which should be followed.

There is approximately 10 thousand students study at the university, and nearly 10 percent of them are international. MENDELU supports own international student club which runs the buddy system programme – Czech volunteer students helping incoming students and partners with adaptation upon arrival. The university also participates in many academic exchange programmes and organises special workshops, conferences, seminars and summer courses. Most of these activities are in English.

The university is known for strong international cooperation with partner universities all over the world. International teachers and interesting opportunities to study abroad make MENDEL very attractive for foreign student.

To facilitate even more applied research and training, the university runs a variety of its own facilities. One of the most important is Institute of Lifelong Learning. The institute offers a wide choice of professional, language and specialized courses and workshops designed for specific audiences. For international students they offer one year course of Czech for Foreigners. For student´s practical trainings there are some special units: Forest Training Enterprise (Masaryk Forest) in Křtiny, University Training Farm in Žabčice and Mendel Pavilion – a shared space on campus for all faculties, offering superior facilities to students for their research. Integral part of the university campus is Botanical Garden and Arboretum which is freely accessible to the whole academic community.
