Introduction

Geosciences and the environment

The disciplines of geosciences and the environment are developing at the border between exact, experimental, and human sciences; they are in essence transdisciplinary.

Geology is a natural science, geography is intended from the outset to be the interface of natural and human sciences, thanks to its two orientations, human and physical. In these frontier areas, the Faculty of Geosciences and the Environment is interested in the natural and/or anthropogenic modifications of our planet, and more particularly in the Alpine areas and urban metropolises. The consequences for humans, animal, and plant species are also part of his research fields. Such developments can only take place on the ground of fundamental disciplines which are maintained and developed at the highest level. The environment concerns all the disciplines of geosciences, ranging from problems of environmental philosophy to questions of ecotoxicology, including the analysis of natural risks.
