Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning & Design (APDesign) was established in 1963 by bringing together into one administrative unit the Departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Construction Science, Interior Architecture, and Regional & Community Planning.

The early founders of that coalition were very insightful, realizing that the practice of the design professions would involve multidisciplinary efforts. Housing these programs in a single college enabled students to better understand the roles and relationships of the disciplines that comprised the design of the built environment. This combination of design and planning received national attention as a model organization for education in the design, planning and management of the environment.

Today, APDesign continues to be a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, environmental design college with accredited professional programs in Architecture, Interior Architecture & Product Design, Landscape Architecture and Regional & Community Planning. APDesign's design programs have been consistently ranked by DesignIntelligence magazine as among the best in the nation.

Our department offers an accredited 3-year Master's degree in Architecture (M. ARCH), developed for students entering with a previously completed bachelor's degree in a program. Applicants with previous degrees in design will be viewed on a case-by-base basis. Years needed to complete the M. ARCH may be reduced from the three-year-plan. Accredited by NAAB, and incorporate coursework in architectural design.

Master of Architecture (M. ARCH)

The non-baccalaureate professional graduate degree track in interior architecture & product design is a five-year program (a one-year environmental design studies program is followed by four years including a summer course of study) and results in the Master of Interior Architecture & Product Design (MIAPD). It is designed for students entering with no academic training in interior architecture & product design. The department’s five-year program of study is one of the first curricula in this profession to be recognized and accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) in the United States.

Master of Interior Architecture & Product Design

We prepare graduates to be leaders in the field of landscape architecture by integrating student learning with faculty research and creative pursuits and engaging with partners in communities and other disciplines. Through these activities we significantly advance the discipline of landscape architecture. We blend our understanding of ecological and societal needs to design, plan and manage the interface between humans and nature to shape environments in ways that benefit both through critical thinking, design processes, and implementation. Focused on preparation for professional practice, we are highly skilled, diligent, passionate people dedicated and working together in vertically integrated studios that are collaborative and energetic.
